Board Takes New Steps Toward Protecting State From CWD

Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners today gave preliminary approval to a measure granting certain emergency authorities to the executive director to prevent the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD), if it is discovered in or near the state or poses a serious threat to the Commonwealth's deer and elk populations.

 

CWD Found in 2nd Free-Roaming Deer in NY

The first positive result in a wild deer was announced on April 27, 2005 and came from a yearling white-tailed deer sampled from the Town of Verona, Oneida County. The second positive result is from a 3-year-old doe, located within a mile of the location where the initial positive result was detected.

CWD Update for May 5, 2005

New York’s discovery of CWD is cause of increased vigilance in Pennsylvania.  Since the positive cases are outside of the 50 mile border radius set by the Game Commission’s current CWD response plan, no increased surveillance of wild deer is mandated at this time. (View past CWD Updates)
