Fee Increase Legislation
Obviously, the PFSC and our fellow
coalition members are quite pleased to be here today, alongside a fellow
sportsman that’s as concerned about the financial stability of the PGC as
our members are. Nearly ten years
ago, Chairman Smith worked with many of these same organizations to craft
the current fee structure. At that
time, he made a commitment to work with us again, when the next fee
increase became necessary. He’s
certainly honored that commitment, and we are grateful for not only his
support, but also his cooperation with all of us.
Unfortunately, this effort should be bipartisan. The wildlife resource knows no political
boundaries. Perhaps that’s why some
of us enjoy it so much!! We are
discouraged that other sportsmen and women legislators among our ranks have
not yet joined with the Chairman. As
it is the General Assembly’s responsibility to provide adequate funding for
our resource agencies, it is our hope that others will also do the right
thing and show their support and commitment to keeping the Pennsylvania
Game Commission adequately funded.
We also hope the Governor will contact Chairman Smith, and
acknowledge his administration’s support for this proposed
legislation. Legislation that is
vital to maintaining the current programs and services provided to all Commonwealth
residents by the Pennsylvania Game Commission, as well as continued
maintenance and management of the more than 1.4 million acres of game lands
that every resident is welcome to use and enjoy; legislation that will
allow the Pennsylvania Game Commission, our wildlife resource agency, to
remain fiscally sound and independent.
Mr. Chairman, we obviously have a difficult road ahead with respect
to securing passage of this legislation.
Many of us would certainly like to see passage prior to the July
2006 hunting season. Rest assured
that our member organizations will work with you to get a final version of
this legislation to the Governor’s desk as soon as possible. Perhaps our only regret is that none of
us will be able to thank you at the polls this year!!
Thank you very much for your willingness to come forward today, and
do the right thing.
